Though the reasons for the burnout epidemic are myriad, at its core I suspect ours is a spiritual crisis: we know we are not gods, but we enter this profession believing we can meaningfully affect people’s lives. Insofar as many physicians are now consumed by activities that have no bearing on others’ well-being and often detract from our own, the remedy is unlikely to be found in less work. Rather, our focus should be on creating environments that give physicians enough space and time to practice medicine in a way that’s meaningful to them. Lisa Rosenbaum MD
