Phase 1 Course Resources
Attendance
Canvas Attendance Quiz Process
- The course admin will post Canvas attendance quizzes for each required session. Quizzes will be locked by a unique access code, which will be provided by the course director or lecturer during the required session.
- Students are not to share this access code with anyone or receive this code from anyone other than the course director or lecturer. Sharing (or receiving) this code or completing this quiz outside of the learning studio is a serious violation of the honor code and failure to comply, could result in disciplinary action.
- Students who attended but did not complete the quiz during the session, should address it with the course director (or lecturer) before leaving the room.
- The faculty member decides whether to excuse it or leave it unexcused and email the course admin the names that should be marked present.
Learning Studios and Session Locations
- First-Year Educational activities (lectures, labs, patient presentations, TBLs) are held in room HME 135 (south learning studio).
- Second-Year Educational activities (lectures, labs, patient presentations, TBLs) are held in room HME 125 (north learning studio).
- Exams are usually given in room HMEB 125 (north learning studio).
Student Support Resources
Clarifications
Students are encouraged to discuss quiz and exam questions with course faculty (e.g., if you think more than one answer is correct). Clarification of quiz and exam questions must be requested by email within seven days after the release of quiz or exam results. Clarification emails must (1) be sent to the course director, (2) refer to the specific question(s), (3) concisely summarize alternative interpretations, and (4) cite reliable information sources (e.g., not Wikipedia).
Exam Comments
Students are encouraged to submit comments on exam questions using a sheet of paper or a link to an online form provided during exams. Student names must be included on comment sheets; sheets without names will not be forwarded to the course director for faculty evaluation.
Illness and Emergencies
- Students who are ill or have an emergency (e.g., family emergency) before an exam are not expected to take the exam. Similarly, if a student is ill for the weekend of a quiz, the student is not expected to take the quiz. Exams and quizzes missed due to illness, emergency or other reasons approved through the absence request process will be rescheduled. A note from a health care provider may be required.
- Students who are ill before an exam should avoid the temptation to “tough it out” to get through the exam. Instead, contact the individuals below to reschedule the exam. It is important to develop good judgement during illness because the health and care of your future patients will depend on it.
- If an exam is missed due to illness, the student must fill out the absence request form via MedCat. If approved, further instructions will be provided by the course administrator.
Assessments and Tardiness or Unexcused Absences
- Tardiness or unexcused absences may affect assessment scores and will be recorded in notes regarding professionalism. Students who miss a quiz for reasons other than illness or an emergency will receive a score of zero. If a student misses an exam or is tardy to an exam and this is not due to illness, the student must contact the course director and provide a suitable explanation. Failure to take an examination without an adequate explanation is a serious matter that may lead to referral to the ASC.
Make-up Exam
- Students who miss an exam due to an excused absence will be permitted to take a make-up exam. It is the student’s responsibility to schedule the make-up exam by contacting the course director and course manager. Students are expected to adhere to the UF Honor Code and not give or accept unauthorized aid for make-up exams (see below).
Exam Remediation
- Failed exams may be remediated. There are two pathways for remediation:
- Students with a cumulative score ≥75% will coordinate remediation with the course director.
- Students with a cumulative score <75% will coordinate remediation with course director and ASC.
- Remediation is determined by the course director and/or the ASC. Successful remediation requires a score ≥75%. The ASC will review the academic record for any students who fail remediation.
- A No Grade (N*) is given to students needing to remediate a failed exam.
- Remediation is not available for failed quizzes.
Academic Progress
- The course director reserves the prerogative to recommend that a student’s progress be reviewed by the ASC regardless of the final cumulative score from scored assignments.
- UF is committed to providing academic accommodations for students with disabilities. Students requesting accommodations must first register with the Disability Resource Center (DRC) (https://disability.ufl.edu, 352-392-8565) by providing appropriate documentation. Once registered, students should present their accommodation letter to the ADA Representative, Mr. Jim Gorske (jgorske@ufl.edu) who will distribute the accommodation letter to appropriate course and/or clerkship directors, as needed, as well as the testing center. The University encourages students to register with the DRC as soon as they begin medical school or upon the verification of a disability.
Electronic Communication
- All electronic correspondence to students related to assessments, grades, student academic records, and FERPA-regulated matters must be sent only to or from a Gatorlink (“ufl.edu”) email address. FERPA, like HIPAA, has specific legal and regulatory restrictions, with violations leading to adverse consequences (see https://registrar.ufl.edu/ferpa/). It is against UF policy to auto-forward Gatorlink email to an outside email address (see http://www.it.ufl.edu/policies/email/electronic-mail).
Student Learning Culture
- The University of Florida College of Medicine is committed to promoting a positive learning culture and treating all members of the college community fairly with regard to both personal and professional concerns. The learning culture feedback policy ensures that concerns are promptly dealt with, and resolutions are reached in a fair and just manner. Mistreatment is any decision, act, or condition affecting a student that is determined to be illegal or unjust or that has created unnecessary hardship. Mistreatment may take the form of verbal or physical abuse, discrimination for any reason, or a requirement for individual service activity that is independent of requirements for other team members. Unprofessional behavior is an action that goes against accepted professionalism standards. Unprofessional behavior may take the form of usage of unprofessional or profane language or disrespect of other physicians, health professions, learners, or patients and families. Any concerns should be reported, including anonymously, using the Learning Culture Feedback Form. Any retaliatory action against student who report grievances in good faith is forbidden by the college. The college also wants to celebrate individuals who are exemplars in contributing positively to the learning environment and facilitate such behavior becoming an inherent part of our culture. These positive interactions can also be reported by using the Learning Culture Feedback Form.
